Welcome to Olivia Jacobson's Maryland Half Marathon Page

 

In 2008, The Baltimore Running Festival was held on the birthday of my husband’s mom, Cathy, who had lost her life to cancer 9 years before. Kirk’s family signed right up. Neither of us were runners at the time, but we took the opportunity to get in shape and trained together. The crazy thing is that I loved it. Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine running even 1 mile (let alone one day train for a marathon!), but when we set off on race day, I knew that I’d been bitten by the racing bug.

This race is a chance to do what I love while raising money for a cause that hits close to home. I’ve seen firsthand what cancer can do to a family, and if we can save even one life – I know we can change the course of a hundred.

Olivia & Kirk - Your words are brief, but your spirits are inspirational. My mother died of Lou Gehrig's Disease, and I understand the pain of losing a loved one. I felt so helpless as she slowly faded from this life, wishing I could do something - anything - to save her! I started running 5 years ago, and also was surprised to "catch" the running bug. It was never my intent. I dedicated my first marathon (Marine Corps 2009) to both my mother and father, who has also since died. Though I have never sought sponsors for my running, your words have encouraged me that it might be a good idea to do that. I'm guessing that people would be more than willing to get behind me (no racing pun intended) if I told them that I was running for a cause bigger than myself. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction...Charlie
